Subject: FIA Certified Rain Light Recommendations
Summary:
Competing on track in wet conditions is challenging and visibility is negatively impacted by open wheel race cars pumping water into the air.
Currently, VRG rules only state formula cars must have a working rain light.
The FFCS Executive Committee (EC) recommends the use of LED rain lights as they are far superior to incandescent bulbs. If you are upgrading to an LED, the FFCS EC recommends a light that meets the new FIA requirements:
Installation and use of a red taillight (rain light) on formula cars meeting FIA Standard 8874-2019, Technical List No. 76; mounted approximately on the centerline of the car.
SCCA has mandated formula car rain lights meet this FIA standard as of 1/1/2024.
