Subject: Recommended Gearing

Summary:

Optimum gearing for the 4 speed Hewland or Webster gearbox can be challenging, subject to trial and error and level of driving skill, condition of the engine, tire type (diameter) and of course the differences in race circuits. 

 

These recommendations are based on the Hoosier VFF tire, 9:31 ring and pinion and advanced driver skills.

 

For cars with 10:31 ring and pinion gears, follow the instruction using the conversion chart attached to this document.

 

For novice, newer or less skilled drivers, select ratios one lower than those recommended here.  Consult the attached table of gear ratios and their numerical equivalent.
