Subject: ELECTRIC TERMINAL INSULATION
Summary:
Recent FFCS Tech inspections have found a number of uninsulated “hot” terminals on cars, with some using tape to insulate the terminal
VRG/FFCS rule 3.2.5.2 BATTERY: requires “The “hot” terminal must be properly insulated.”
Also, 3.2.5.3 INSULATION: requires “All electrically “hot” terminals should be insulated: battery, cut out switch terminals (if wired in “hot” side of circuit), starter solenoid terminals, etc.
Using tape for insulation is acceptable, per VRG Tech, but below are recommended more robust insulation methods consisting of rubber or silicone tape, rubber hose, plastic or rubber boots on the positive terminal of the battery, both wires on the master cut off switch, positive coil terminal, and main lead at the starter.
Examples of boots from Pegasus Auto Racing Supply and McMaster-Carr.
